First aid & emergencies

Grade 3 · Health & Wellness · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your friendly tutor. Today we will learn how to make a great plan to stay safe in emergencies!

An emergency is a sudden event that can be dangerous. A fire is one example. We need a plan so we know exactly what to do to stay safe.

A good fire plan has two escape routes out of every room. We must also choose a safe meeting spot outside. This could be a big tree or a mailbox.

Meeting Spot

We must practice our plan with our family. This helps us move fast and stay calm. If there is smoke, remember to crawl low under it.

Danger: Smoke is High Safe Air is Low!
✏️ Worked example

Let us design a safety plan for Ben. He lives in a house with a front door and a back yard. Walk through the steps to build and test his plan.

  1. First, Ben finds two ways out of his bedroom. Way one is the bedroom door. Way two is the bedroom window.
  2. Next, Ben chooses a safe meeting spot. He picks the big oak tree in the front yard.
  3. Then, Ben writes down the emergency phone number, 911, near the phone.
  4. Last, Ben and his family practice the plan. They pretend the alarm sounds, crawl low, and meet at the oak tree.
