Grade 4 · Health & Wellness · Free lesson

Welcome! Let's learn how to make a great emergency plan for your home.

An emergency plan helps your family stay safe if a fire starts. Knowing what to do keeps everyone calm and fast.

First, find two ways out of every room. Doors are best, but windows can be a second exit.

Exit 1 (Door) Exit 2 (Window)

Next, pick a safe meeting place outside. A tree or mailbox far from the house works great.

Safe Meeting Place

To evaluate your plan, walk through it with your family. Practice getting out fast and meeting outside.

✏️ Worked example

Help Sam make a fire safety plan for his bedroom.

  1. Step 1: Look around Sam's bedroom to find two exits.
  2. Step 2: Exit 1 is the main hallway door. Exit 2 is the bedroom window.
  3. Step 3: Pick a safe spot outside. Sam chooses the big oak tree by the sidewalk.
  4. Step 4: Explain the plan to Sam's family so everyone knows what to do.
  5. Step 5: Test the plan by practicing a night fire drill together.
