Germs & preventing illness

Grade 5 · Health & Wellness · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your science tutor. Today we will explore how to keep our bodies healthy and strong!

Germs are tiny living things that can make us sick. They travel from person to person through the air, on our hands, or on things we touch.

We can stop germs by washing our hands with soap and water. Scrubbing for twenty seconds washes the germs down the drain before they can enter our bodies.

Immunization is another key way we protect our bodies. Vaccines teach our immune system how to recognize and fight off dangerous germs before they make us sick.

✏️ Worked example

Leo wants to explain how germs spread when someone sneezes. He also wants to show how a mask or tissue helps. Let us walk through how to explain this process step-by-step.

  1. First, identify how the germs travel. When a person sneezes, tiny wet drops shoot into the air.
  2. Next, explain the transmission. If another person breathes in those drops, the germs enter their body.
  3. Then, look at the prevention method. Putting a tissue or mask over the nose and mouth blocks the drops.
  4. Finally, conclude the explanation. Since the drops are blocked, the germs cannot fly into the air or reach other people.
