Healthy eating & nutrition

Grade 6 · Health & Wellness · Free lesson

Hello! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today we will explore how the food we eat helps our bodies grow strong and healthy!

Your body needs three main food groups to grow. Fruits and vegetables give you vitamins, dairy makes your bones strong, and protein builds your muscles.

fruits

We can compare foods to see how they help us. For example, an apple is a healthy snack because it has natural vitamins, while a bag of chips is an unhealthy choice because it has too much salt and bad fat.

Healthy Apple Unhealthy Chips

Healthy snacks give you steady energy to play and think. Unhealthy snacks often have too much added sugar, which makes you feel tired later.

✏️ Worked example

Let us evaluate two snack options: a bowl of plain yogurt with fresh strawberries versus a frosted donut. Which one is the healthier choice for your afternoon snack, and why?

  1. Identify the food groups in the yogurt and strawberries. Yogurt is dairy, which helps your bones. Strawberries are fruits, which give you vitamins.
  2. Identify the ingredients in the frosted donut. The donut is made of white flour, fried in oil, and covered in sugary frosting.
  3. Compare the health benefits. Yogurt and strawberries give your body protein, calcium, and vitamins to grow. The donut has a lot of added sugar and unhealthy fat with very little nutrition.
  4. Explain the final choice. The yogurt and strawberries are the healthy choice because they help your body grow and give you lasting energy.
