Making good choices: substances

Grade 6 · Health & Wellness · Free lesson

Hi! I'm Studyfin, your tutor. Let's learn how to make safe, healthy choices about medicines!

Medicines are helpful tools when we are sick. Some are over-the-counter, which means anyone can buy them. Others are prescription drugs, which only a doctor can write for you.

Using medicine the wrong way is called misuse. This includes taking too much, taking someone else's medicine, or using it when you are not sick. Misuse can harm your body and brain.

Never share or misuse medicine

We avoid misuse because medicines are powerful. A doctor decides the exact amount based on a person's age, weight, and health. What is safe for one person can be very dangerous for another.

Medicines must be carefully balanced
✏️ Worked example

Imagine your friend has a bad cough. They offer you some of their prescription cough syrup because you are coughing too. Explain why you should refuse this offer, step-by-step.

  1. Identify the type of medicine. This is a prescription drug, which means it was chosen by a doctor specifically for your friend.
  2. Analyze the risks. The doctor based the prescription on your friend's body size, age, and medical history. It might have ingredients that are dangerous for you.
  3. Evaluate the action. Taking someone else's prescription is a form of drug misuse, even if you feel sick.
  4. Formulate your response. Politely refuse the syrup and tell your friend that sharing prescription medicine is unsafe.
  5. Take a safe action. Tell a trusted adult, like a parent or the school nurse, that you are not feeling well so they can give you the correct care.
