Body systems & growing up

Grade 7 · Health & Wellness · Free lesson

Hey there! I'm Studyfin, your science tutor. Today, we are exploring how your amazing body systems work together as you grow!

Your body has special systems that work like a team. The nervous, immune, digestive, and integumentary systems keep you alive and healthy every single day.

The nervous system is your body's control center. It includes your brain, spinal cord, and nerves, which send lightning-fast signals to help you react to the world.

BRAINNervous System Signals

Your integumentary system is your skin, hair, and nails. Its primary job is to act as a protective barrier, keeping germs out and moisture in.

Skin BarrierGermIntegumentary Protection

The digestive system breaks down food into nutrients for energy, while your immune system defends your body against harmful invaders like viruses.

✏️ Worked example

Let's analyze what happens when you accidentally touch a hot stove. Explain step-by-step how your nervous and integumentary systems work together to protect you.

  1. Identify the stimulus: Your finger touches the hot stove. The integumentary system (your skin) detects the extreme heat.
  2. Send the message: Sensors in your skin trigger the nervous system. A fast electrical signal travels up your arm to your spinal cord.
  3. Process the danger: Your spinal cord processes this emergency signal quickly, bypassing the brain to save time. This is a reflex.
  4. Take action: The nervous system sends a signal back to your arm muscles, making you pull your hand away in a split second.
  5. Protect and heal: Your skin barrier (integumentary system) might get a minor burn, but it immediately starts working to heal and keep bacteria out of the injured spot.
