Exercise & physical activity

Grade 7 · Health & Wellness · Free lesson

Hi! I am Studyfin, your science tutor. Today, we will explore how daily exercise and good sleep keep your body strong!

Your body needs daily habits to stay healthy and full of energy. Two of the most important habits are getting enough sleep and moving your body every day.

Regular physical activity strengthens your heart, muscles, and bones. When you run or play, your heart pumps faster to send oxygen-rich blood all over your body.

Active Heart & Blood Flow

Sleep is when your body repairs itself and organizes your thoughts. Middle school students need 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night to feel their best.

✏️ Worked example

Let us evaluate Maya's daily habits to see if she is staying healthy. Maya gets 6 hours of sleep each night. She also sits to play video games for 5 hours after school. Let us analyze her choices and suggest better habits.

  1. Identify the sleep target: Middle schoolers need 9 to 11 hours of sleep. Maya only gets 6 hours, which is too low.
  2. Identify the physical activity target: Teenagers need at least 60 minutes of daily active movement. Maya sits for 5 hours, which is too sedentary.
  3. Evaluate the impact: Lack of sleep will make Maya tired and less focused. Sitting too long makes her muscles and heart work less.
  4. Suggest healthy changes: Maya should sleep 3 hours more each night. She should also replace 1 hour of video games with outdoor play or sports.
