Making good choices: substances

Grade 7 · Health & Wellness · Free lesson

Hey there! Today, we will learn how to make safe, healthy choices about medicines and why using them correctly is so important.

Medicines are helpful tools when we are sick. However, using them the wrong way can be very dangerous for our bodies. We must understand the difference between over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs to stay safe.

Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines can be bought off the shelf without a doctor's note. Even though they are easy to buy, we must still follow the label instructions carefully. Taking too much of an OTC medicine can harm your liver or stomach.

Read Labels!

Prescription drugs are specially ordered by a doctor for one specific person. Sharing these medicines is highly dangerous because a dose that helps one person can seriously injure another. A doctor carefully calculates the safe amount based on a person's weight, age, and health history.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine a friend tells you they have a headache before a big test. They offer to share a prescription pill that their doctor gave them for pain. Explain the steps to analyze this situation and make a safe decision.

  1. Identify the type of medicine being offered. In this case, it is a prescription drug.
  2. Explain the risk of sharing prescription medicine. This pill was specifically chosen by a doctor for your friend's body, weight, and health history, not yours.
  3. Evaluate the danger of taking it. Since you do not have a prescription for this drug, taking it could cause an unexpected, harmful reaction.
  4. Formulate a safe alternative action. Politely refuse the pill and ask a trusted adult, like the school nurse or a teacher, for help with your headache.
