Body systems & growing up

Grade 8 · Health & Wellness · Free lesson

Hey there! Ready to explore how your body works? We are going to look at four key systems that keep you healthy and strong every single day!

Your body has special systems that work together to help you grow. Today, we will name, locate, and describe the nervous, immune, digestive, and integumentary systems.

anatomy

The nervous system is your body's control center, located in your brain, spinal cord, and nerves. It sends fast electrical signals to help you react, think, and move.

Nervous System: Brain & Nerves

Your integumentary system is your skin, hair, and nails. Located on the very outside of your body, its main function is to act as a protective barrier against dirt and germs.

SKINSHIELDIntegumentary System: Skin Barrier

Inside you, the digestive system breaks down food in your stomach and intestines to give you energy. Meanwhile, your immune system uses white blood cells to fight off any germs that sneak inside.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you step on a sharp pebble. Explain how your nervous system and integumentary system work together in this situation.

  1. First, analyze the role of the integumentary system. The skin on the bottom of your foot acts as the physical barrier. The pebble presses against this skin layer.
  2. Next, explain the role of the nervous system. Sensors in your skin detect the sharp pressure and send an instant electrical signal up your leg to your spinal cord and brain.
  3. Then, look at the reaction. Your brain processes the pain signal and immediately sends a message back to your leg muscles.
  4. Finally, combine these ideas. Your integumentary system senses the physical touch, while your nervous system carries the message so you can lift your foot quickly and stay safe.
