Your body needs two main habits to stay healthy and strong. These are getting enough sleep and doing daily physical activity.

Daily physical activity keeps your heart strong, boosts your mood, and helps you focus in school. Middle school students need at least 60 minutes of active movement every single day.

Sleep is when your brain recharges and your muscles repair themselves. Eighth graders need about 9 to 11 hours of solid sleep each night to feel their best.

✏️ Worked example

Let us look at Maya's daily habits. She plays basketball for 60 minutes after school. She stays up late on her phone and only gets 6 hours of sleep. Explain how her habits affect her health and identify what she needs to change.

  1. Identify the healthy habits in Maya's routine. She gets 60 minutes of basketball, which meets the daily physical activity goal.
  2. Identify the unhealthy habits. Maya only gets 6 hours of sleep because she stays up late on her phone.
  3. Compare her sleep to the recommended amount. Eighth graders need 9 to 11 hours, so 6 hours is too low.
  4. Explain the impact of her habits. While her heart is strong from basketball, her brain cannot fully recharge because of the lack of sleep.
  5. Formulate a healthy change. Maya should turn off her phone earlier to get at least 9 hours of sleep each night.
