Making good choices: substances

Grade 8 · Health & Wellness · Free lesson

Hi! I'm Studyfin, your tutor. Today, we will explore why it is so important to use medicines safely and avoid misusing them.

Medicines are helpful tools when we use them correctly. However, misusing over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription drugs can be very dangerous for your body.

Over-the-counter medicines are bought without a prescription, but they still have strict safety rules. Taking too much or ignoring the label can harm your liver or kidneys.

! Always Read the Label!

Prescription medicines are specially chosen by a doctor for one specific person. Sharing these medicines is highly dangerous because doses are based on a person's unique body weight and health needs.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine a friend has a bad headache during school. They ask you for one of your prescription pain pills. Explain why you must refuse, and walk through the steps to handle this safely.

  1. Analyze the risk: Identify that sharing a prescription drug is dangerous misuse. Explain that the pill was prescribed only for your body, not theirs.
  2. Formulate your response: State clearly and kindly that you cannot share your medicine because it is unsafe.
  3. Offer a safe alternative: Suggest going to the school nurse together to get proper, safe help.
  4. Take action: Walk with your friend to the clinic so a trusted adult can assist them.
