Sleep, stress & self-care

Grade 8 · Health & Wellness · Free lesson

Hey there! I'm Studyfin, and today we are going to explore how we can handle life's ups and downs like a pro.

Life can get busy with school, sports, and friends. When we face big challenges, our bodies and minds feel stress, trauma, loss, or grief.

We can examine stress by noticing how it shows up in our body, our emotions, and our choices: a racing heart, a short temper, or putting off homework. Short bursts of stress can sharpen focus, but stress that never lets up keeps the body's fight-or-flight response switched on. Slow, deep breathing sends the nervous system a signal to dial that response back down.

Breathe In... Breathe Out...

Sleep is another core part of self-care. Teens need about 8 to 10 hours a night, because while we sleep the brain sorts and stores memories, steadies our emotions, and the body repairs itself. When we run short on sleep, stress, grief, and everyday frustrations all feel much harder to handle.

ZZSleep Recharges Your Mind
✏️ Worked example

Imagine your friend Jordan is feeling very sad and stressed after losing a beloved family pet. How can Jordan examine this situation and find a healthy way to reduce the impact of this grief?

  1. Identify the feeling: Jordan recognizes the heavy feeling as grief from losing a pet.
  2. Examine the impact: Jordan notices that this grief makes it hard to sleep and focus on schoolwork.
  3. Choose a strategy: Jordan decides to talk to a trusted adult and write down favorite memories of the pet.
  4. Take action: Jordan writes in a journal for ten minutes before bed to help calm the mind.
  5. Reflect on the result: Jordan notices that sharing memories makes the sadness feel a little lighter and helps with sleep.
