First, we look at the clues. In the puzzle 2, 4, 6, [ ? ], each number is 2 more than the one before it.

Find the Pattern! 5 10 ? Clue: We add 5 each time!

Next, we make a plan and solve it. We add 2 to 6 and get 8. Then we check: 2, 4, 6, 8 follows the rule, so 8 makes sense.

5 10 15 It works! 10 + 5 = 15.
✏️ Worked example

Find the missing number in this puzzle: 3, 6, 9, [ ? ]

  1. Analyze: Look at the numbers 3, 6, and 9. See how they change.
  2. Plan: Find the relationship. To go from 3 to 6, we add 3. To go from 6 to 9, we add 3. The pattern is +3.
  3. Solve: Add 3 to the last number. 9 + 3 = 12.
  4. Justify: Check if 12 fits. 3, 6, 9, 12 is a correct skip-counting pattern.
  5. Evaluate: The plan worked because adding 3 is a constant rule that fits all the numbers.
