Pattern recognition

Grade 3 · Logic & Puzzles · Free lesson

Hello! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today we will explore patterns and learn how to predict what comes next!

A pattern is something that repeats in a clear way. Shapes, colors, and numbers can all make patterns. Finding them helps us solve puzzles.

pictures

Let us look at a number pattern. It goes 3, 6, 9, 12, 15. This pattern does not just repeat. It grows by adding 3 each time.

Circle, Square, Circle...

We can use patterns to make predictions. A prediction is a smart guess about what will happen next. We use the pattern rules to find the answer.

What color comes next? Purple or Amber?
✏️ Worked example

Look at this number pattern: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20. What number comes next?

  1. Look at the first two numbers. They are 4 and 8.
  2. Find how much the pattern grows. From 4 to 8 is a jump of 4.
  3. Check the other jumps. From 8 to 12 and from 12 to 16 are also jumps of 4.
  4. Write the pattern rule. The rule is: add 4 each time.
  5. Find the last number in the line. It is 20.
  6. Use the rule to predict: 20 + 4 = 24. The next number must be 24!
