A riddle is a word puzzle. It gives you clues about a secret object. To solve it, we must analyze the clues and think like a detective.
First, look at the clues. This is called analyzing your information. We find what is important and throw away what is not.
Next, we make a plan and find a solution. Then, we justify our answer. Justify means we explain why our answer fits every single clue perfectly.
Lastly, we evaluate our process. We check if our answer makes sense. If it does not, we try a new strategy!
✏️ Worked example
Solve this riddle using our problem-solving model: 'I have a spine, but I have no bones. I have leaves, but I am not a tree. What am I?'
- Analyze the clues. Clue 1: It has a spine but no bones. Clue 2: It has leaves but is not a tree.
- Formulate a strategy. Think of things that have a 'spine' that are not animals. Think of things with 'leaves' that are not plants.
- Determine a solution. A book has a spine to hold pages. A book also has sheets of paper called leaves.
- Justify the solution. A book fits Clue 1 because its back binding is called a spine. It fits Clue 2 because pages are also called leaves.
- Evaluate. Does a book make sense? Yes, it matches all clues perfectly!
