A logic grid is a puzzle. It helps you match items using clues. You use a grid to keep track of your clues.
We use a problem-solving model to find the answer. First, we analyze the clues to see what is true or false. Next, we make a plan.
Now we determine the solution. We write an 'X' if a match is impossible. We write an 'O' when we find a correct match.
Lastly, we justify and evaluate our solution. We check if our matches make sense with all of the clues. This ensures our final answer is correct.
✏️ Worked example
Two friends, Amy and Leo, own different pets. One has a dog and the other has a bird. Clue: Amy does not own a bird. Who owns which pet?
- Analyze: We have two people (Amy, Leo) and two pets (dog, bird). Clue: Amy does not own a bird.
- Plan: We will use a grid. We will mark an X for matches that cannot be true.
- Solve: Since Amy does not own a bird, we put an X in the Amy-bird box.
- Determine: This means Amy must own the dog. We put an O in the Amy-dog box.
- Fill: Since Amy has the dog, Leo must own the bird. We put an O in the Leo-bird box.
- Justify & Evaluate: We check our answer. Amy has a dog. Leo has a bird. This matches our clue that Amy does not own a bird. The solution is reasonable and correct!
