Logic grids

Grade 5 · Logic & Puzzles · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today we will learn how to solve fun logic puzzles using a simple grid!

A logic grid is a helpful chart that organizes clues. It lets us sort facts and find correct matches. We can use it to solve mysteries step by step.

First, we analyze our clues to see what is true or false. We mark a red 'X' for things that cannot match. This helps us see what options are left.

When we find a correct match, we put a green checkmark. This means we can cross out all other choices in that same row and column. It makes our plan clear!

Finally, we evaluate our completed grid. We check if our solution fits every clue perfectly. If it does, we have solved our logic puzzle!

✏️ Worked example

Two friends, Leo and Mia, have different pets: a fish and a bird. Clue: Mia's pet does not have feathers. Who owns the fish?

  1. Analyze the given information: There are two people (Leo and Mia) and two pets (fish and bird).
  2. Formulate a plan: Create a 2x2 grid with names on the side and pets on top.
  3. Analyze the clue: Mia's pet does not have feathers. This means Mia does not own the bird.
  4. Determine a solution: Put an 'X' for Mia and bird. This leaves the fish for Mia, and the bird for Leo.
  5. Justify and evaluate: Since Mia has the fish, and Leo has the bird, Mia's pet (fish) has no feathers. This matches our clue perfectly!
