A riddle is a word puzzle. It gives you clues about a secret object or idea. To solve it, we must analyze the clues instead of just guessing.
First, we look for key details. This is called analyzing our information. We find what the secret thing does, its shape, or where it lives.
Next, we make a strategy. We list things that fit the clues, like a piano or a computer keyboard. Then we determine our solution, justify it by checking it against every clue, and evaluate how well our plan worked.
✏️ Worked example
Use our 5-step model to solve this riddle: 'I have a spine, but I have no bones. I have leaves, but I am not a tree. What am I?'
Analyze the clues: Clue 1 says 'has a spine but no bones'. Clue 2 says 'has leaves but is not a tree'.
Formulate a strategy: List items with 'leaves' (books, plants) and items with 'spines' (animals, books). Find where they overlap.
Determine a solution: A book has a spine to hold pages together. A book also has pages, which are sometimes called leaves. The solution is a book.
Justify the solution: A book fits both clues. It has a spine made of paper and glue, not bone. Its pages are leaves, but it is made of paper, not a living tree.
Evaluate the process: The solution makes perfect sense. Our strategy worked because we looked at the double meanings of 'spine' and 'leaves'.
