Hey there! Ready to become a logic detective? Today, we will learn how to solve puzzles using a cool tool called a logic grid.

A logic grid is a puzzle where you match different items together. We use a problem-solving model to analyze clues, make a plan, find the solution, and check our work.

We start by analyzing our clues to find what is true and what is false. We put an 'X' in the grid when a match is impossible, and a green checkmark when a match is certain.

When you find a match, you can cross out all other options in that row and column. This simple plan helps you narrow down the correct answers fast.

✏️ Worked example

Two friends, Leo and Mia, own different pets. One owns a bird, and the other owns a fish. Leo does not own a bird. Let's use our problem-solving model to find out who owns each pet, and make sure our answer makes sense.

  1. Analyze: We have two people (Leo, Mia) and two pets (bird, fish). The clue says: 'Leo does not own a bird.'
  2. Plan: We will create a small grid. We will put an X for impossible matches and a checkmark for correct matches.
  3. Solve: Since Leo does not own a bird, we put an X in the box where Leo and bird meet. This means Leo must own the fish, so we put a checkmark there.
  4. Solve: Since Leo owns the fish, Mia cannot own the fish. We put an X for Mia and fish. This leaves Mia with the bird, so we put a checkmark there.
  5. Justify & Evaluate: Our final solution is Leo owns the fish and Mia owns the bird. Let's check the clues. Does Leo own a bird? No, he owns a fish. Is every pet owned by one person? Yes. The solution is reasonable and correct!
