Spatial reasoning is the skill of moving objects inside your head. You can turn a shape or flip it to see how it looks from another side.
When you rotate a shape, its size and lines stay the same. Only the direction of the shape changes as it spins around a fixed center point.
We can analyze how two blocks fit together. By checking their corners and edges, we can create a plan to solve spatial puzzles easily.
✏️ Worked example
Determine if an L-shape turned 90 degrees clockwise matches a target shape.
- Analyze the given L-shape by looking at its long stem and short base.
- Formulate a plan to rotate the shape mentally by 90 degrees clockwise.
- Determine the solution by turning the top stem to point to the right.
- Justify the solution by comparing the new corners to the target drawing.
- Evaluate the reasonableness of your answer by checking that the size did not change.
