Spatial reasoning

Grade 7 · Logic & Puzzles · Free lesson

Hey there! Ready to train your brain to see the world in 3D? Let's explore how shapes move and fit together!

Spatial reasoning is the ability to picture 3D shapes in your mind. We use a problem-solving model to analyze the shape's features, plan how to rotate it, and check if our answer makes sense.

puzzle

To rotate a 3D shape in your mind, look for a 'key feature' like a unique color or a pointing corner. Watch how this colored block moves to a new position when we rotate the whole shape.

Rotate

We can analyze mathematical relationships by connecting 2D flat patterns, called nets, to their 3D shapes. Folding a 2D net into a 3D cube helps us communicate how flat faces join to make a solid object.

Folding 2D to 3D
✏️ Worked example

A 3D L-shape is made of four blocks. The long side goes up, and the short side points to the right. If we rotate this shape 90 degrees clockwise in our minds, which way will the short side point?

  1. Analyze the given information: The original shape has a tall vertical line of blocks, and a short piece sticking out to the right at the bottom.
  2. Formulate a plan: Picture the shape on a clock face. The tall part points to 12 o'clock, and the short part points to 3 o'clock.
  3. Determine the solution by rotating: Turn the imaginary clock 90 degrees clockwise. The tall part that pointed to 12 o'clock now points to 3 o'clock. The short part that pointed to 3 o'clock now points straight down to 6 o'clock.
  4. Justify the solution: Since 90 degrees clockwise is a quarter-turn to the right, every part of the shape must shift a quarter-turn. The short part goes from right (3 o'clock) to down (6 o'clock).
  5. Evaluate the process: The relative positions did not change. The short part is still attached to the same end of the long part, meaning our 3D rotation was accurate and reasonable.
