Spatial reasoning is the ability to visualize and manipulate shapes in your mind. Today, we will use a five-step problem-solving model to analyze, plan, solve, justify, and evaluate these mental puzzles.

Let's analyze how a shape changes when it rotates. When a shape turns, its parts keep the same mathematical relationships, but their positions shift. Picture a triangle whose tip points straight up: after a ninety-degree clockwise turn, that tip points to the right.

To solve spatial puzzles, we formulate a plan by tracking a single point. For example, if a red dot is at the top of our shape, we can predict exactly where it will land after the turn.

A square has a blue star in its top-left corner. If you rotate the square 90 degrees clockwise, in which corner will the blue star land? Walk through the complete problem-solving model to find and justify the solution.

  1. Analyze: Identify the given information. We have a square. The blue star starts in the top-left corner. We need to find its new position after a 90-degree clockwise rotation.
  2. Plan: Formulate a strategy. Imagine the square as a clock face. A 90-degree clockwise turn is a one-quarter turn to the right. We can track the movement of the top-left corner.
  3. Solve: Carry out the plan. Moving the top-left corner one-quarter turn clockwise along the border of the square brings it to the top-right corner.
  4. Justify: Support the solution. Since a full rotation is 360 degrees, 90 degrees is exactly one-fourth of a full turn. Moving clockwise from top-left goes directly to top-right.
  5. Evaluate: Review the process. Does the answer make sense? Yes, because the star moved clockwise, and top-right is the next corner clockwise from top-left.
