Geometry: Surface area & volume of solids

Hey there! Today we are going to explore 3D shapes. We will discover the difference between the space inside a shape and the wrapping on its outside!

Every 3D object has two major measurements: surface area and volume. Surface area is the total area of all the flat faces on the outside, while volume is the amount of 3D space contained inside the shape.

Let's look at volume first! Imagine filling a rectangular box with unit cubes. The total number of cubes that fit inside tells us the volume, calculated by multiplying length times width times height.

Now, let's look at surface area! Imagine unfolding a cardboard box flat onto the table. This flat representation is called a 'net', and adding up the area of all these flat shapes gives you the total surface area.

Surface Area = Flat Net Area
✏️ Worked example

Find the volume and surface area of a cardboard box (rectangular prism) that has a length of 5 cm, a width of 3 cm, and a height of 4 cm.

  1. Identify your dimensions: Length (l) = 5 cm, Width (w) = 3 cm, and Height (h) = 4 cm.
  2. Calculate the Volume using the formula: Volume = length × width × height.
  3. Substitute the values: Volume = 5 cm × 3 cm × 4 cm = 60 cubic centimeters (cm³).
  4. Calculate the Surface Area by finding the area of all 6 rectangular faces: Surface Area = 2(lw + lh + wh).
  5. Substitute the values: Surface Area = 2(5×3 + 5×4 + 3×4) = 2(15 + 20 + 12) = 2(47) = 94 square centimeters (cm²).
