Addition & subtraction

Grade 3 · Math · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today we will explore how we add and subtract numbers!

Adding is when we put groups of things together. We use a plus sign (+) to show we are adding. This makes a bigger total group.

numbers

Let us see how adding works. If you have 3 blue dots and add 2 orange dots, you get 5 dots in total! We can write this as 3 + 2 = 5.

Subtraction is when we take some things away from a group. We use a minus sign (-) to show we are subtracting. This makes our group smaller.

We had 5 dots.We took away 2. Now we have 3!
✏️ Worked example

Leo has 12 toy cars. He gives 4 cars to his sister. Then, his dad buys him 3 more cars. How many toy cars does Leo have now?

  1. First, find out what the question asks. We need to find the total number of cars Leo has now.
  2. Start with the number of cars Leo has at first. That is 12 cars.
  3. Leo gives 4 cars away. Giving away means we subtract. So we do 12 minus 4. This leaves Leo with 8 cars.
  4. Next, Leo gets 3 more cars. Getting more means we add. So we add 3 to his 8 cars.
  5. Add the numbers: 8 + 3 = 11.
  6. Leo has 11 toy cars now!
