Have you ever wanted to build a fence for a puppy or lay down a cozy rug? Perimeter and area help us do exactly that! They are two different ways we measure flat shapes.
Perimeter is the distance all the way around the outside of a shape. Think of it like a fence or a border. We find it by adding the lengths of all the sides together!
Area is the amount of flat space inside a shape. Think of it like tiles on a floor or patches of grass. We measure area in square units, like little square tiles!
To remember the difference easily, think of perimeter as the outer framing border, and area as the colorful paint that fills it in!
Let's find the perimeter and area of a rectangle that is 5 units wide and 3 units tall!
- First, find the perimeter by adding all four sides: 5 + 3 + 5 + 3.
- Add them up: 5 + 3 = 8, and another 5 + 3 = 8.
- Now combine them: 8 + 8 = 16. The perimeter is 16 units!
- Next, find the area by multiplying the width by the height: 5 times 3.
- Calculate the multiplication: 5 x 3 = 15.
- So, the area is 15 square units! You did it!
