Fractions have two parts. The top number is the numerator. It tells us how many parts we have. The bottom number is the denominator. It tells us the total number of equal parts.
Let us compare fractions with the same bottom number. If the bottom numbers are the same, look at the top numbers. A bigger top number means you have more parts. So, 3/4 is bigger than 2/4.
Now let us compare fractions with the same top number. If the top numbers are the same, look at the bottom. A smaller bottom number means the pieces are cut larger. So, 1/2 is bigger than 1/4.
✏️ Worked example
Sam has 2/3 of a candy bar. Jan has 2/6 of the same candy bar. Who has the bigger share?
- Find the top numbers. Both fractions have 2 as the top number.
- Look at the bottom numbers. The bottom numbers are 3 and 6.
- Think about the size of the pieces. A candy bar cut into 3 pieces has bigger parts than one cut into 6 pieces.
- Compare the fractions. Since thirds are bigger than sixths, 2/3 is bigger than 2/6.
- Write your answer. Sam has the bigger share!
