When we collect information—like asking our friends about their favorite fruits—we call that information **data**. Graphs help us see that data in a clear and beautiful way!
To keep track of our counts, we can use **tally marks**. For every item we count, we make a line, and every fifth line crosses the first four like a little gate!
A **bar graph** uses colorful bars to show our data. The taller the bar, the larger the number of items we counted! It makes comparing groups super easy.
Sally counted the birds in her garden. She saw 4 robins, 2 blue jays, and 5 sparrows. How can she write this as tally marks and find the total?
- First, list the types of birds: Robins, Blue Jays, and Sparrows.
- Draw tally marks for each. For Robins, draw 4 vertical lines: | | | |.
- For Blue Jays, draw 2 vertical lines: | |.
- For Sparrows, draw 4 vertical lines and 1 diagonal line across them to make a group of 5.
- To find the total number of birds, add the tallies together: 4 + 2 + 5 = 11 birds!
