Division

Grade 3 · Math · Free lesson

Hi there! I'm Studyfin, and I'm so excited to explore division with you today. Division is just a friendly way of sharing things equally!

Imagine you have 6 delicious strawberries and you want to share them equally between 2 plates. Division helps us figure out exactly how many strawberries go on each plate so everyone gets the same amount!

numbers

When we divide, we start with a big group and break it into smaller, equal groups. Watch how our 6 bright tokens slide perfectly into 2 plates, putting exactly 3 tokens on each plate!

Plate 1Plate 2

We write this using a special division sign that looks like a little line with dots: ÷. When we say '6 divided by 2 equals 3', we write it out as a division sentence!

✏️ Worked example

Share 8 toy cars equally among 4 friends. How many cars does each friend get?

  1. Start with your total number of items, which is 8 toy cars.
  2. Identify the number of groups you need to make. Since there are 4 friends, we need 4 equal groups.
  3. Pass out the cars one by one to each of the 4 friends until all 8 cars are gone.
  4. Count how many cars one friend has. You will see that each friend gets exactly 2 cars!
  5. Write your division sentence: 8 ÷ 4 = 2.
