Equivalent fractions

Grade 3 · Math · Free lesson

Hi there! Let's explore fractions that look different but show the exact same amount.

Fractions have different names but can show the same size. We call these equivalent fractions. Equivalent means equal in value.

Imagine a yummy chocolate bar. You can cut it into two big halves. Or you can cut it into four smaller quarters.

1/2 of a bar 2/4 of a bar They are the same size!

We can prove two fractions are equal. They must cover the same part of one whole shape. Look at how 1/2 and 2/4 match up perfectly.

1/2 2/4 Both show half!
✏️ Worked example

Are 2/3 and 4/6 equivalent fractions? Let us find out step by step.

  1. Draw two rectangles that are the exact same size.
  2. Divide the first rectangle into 3 equal parts. Color 2 parts to show 2/3.
  3. Divide the second rectangle into 6 equal parts. Color 4 parts to show 4/6.
  4. Look at the colored parts of both rectangles.
  5. Both colored parts are the same size. So, 2/3 and 4/6 are equivalent!
