Fractions

Grade 3 · Math · Free lesson

Hi there! I'm Studyfin, and today we're going to explore fractions! Fractions are just a fun way to show equal parts of a whole, like slices of a delicious pizza.

Imagine you have a whole, yummy cookie. If you share it equally with a friend, you cut it into two equal pieces. Each piece is a fraction of the whole cookie!

board

To make a fraction, the parts must be exactly the same size! If we cut a circle into 4 equal slices, each slice is one-fourth of the whole circle.

4 Equal Parts = 1 Whole

A fraction is written with two numbers. The bottom number tells us how many equal parts there are in total, and the top number tells us how many parts we have.

✏️ Worked example

Emma has a chocolate bar divided into 6 equal pieces. She eats 2 pieces. What fraction of the chocolate bar did Emma eat?

  1. First, count the total number of equal pieces in the whole chocolate bar. There are 6 pieces in total, so our denominator (bottom number) is 6.
  2. Next, count how many pieces Emma ate. She ate 2 pieces, so our numerator (top number) is 2.
  3. Put the numerator on top of the denominator to write your fraction: 2/6.
  4. Great job! Emma ate two-sixths (2/6) of her chocolate bar!
