Measurement

Grade 3 · Math · Free lesson

Hi there! I'm Studyfin, your friendly learning buddy. Today, we are going to learn how to use a ruler to measure the length of everyday objects!

Have you ever wondered how long your favorite pencil or a cute little ladybug is? We use a tool called a ruler to measure length and find out exactly how long things are!

When we measure, we must always align the very edge of our object with the 0 mark on the ruler. If we start at 1 by mistake, our measurement will not be correct!

012345Line up with 0!

Next, look at the other end of the object. The number where the object stops tells you how long it is! If your object ends right at the 2, it is exactly 2 inches long.

01232 inches!
✏️ Worked example

Let's measure a yellow key! If we place the flat left side of the key at 0 on our ruler, and the pointy right tip of the key reaches the number 5, how long is the key?

  1. First, make sure the left end of the key is lined up perfectly with the 0 mark on the ruler.
  2. Next, follow the body of the key all the way to its right-hand tip.
  3. Look straight down from the tip to see which number it points to on the ruler.
  4. Since the tip of the key lines up with the number 5, the key is exactly 5 inches long!
