Every coin has its own value. A quarter is worth 25 cents, a dime is 10 cents, a nickel is 5 cents, and a penny is 1 cent.
To find the total value, we start with the largest coin. We add them up until we reach the smallest coin.
We can write money in two ways. We can use the cent sign like 40¢, or a dollar sign with a decimal point like $0.40.
✏️ Worked example
Find the total value of 2 quarters, 1 dime, and 3 pennies. Write the value in two different ways.
- First, sort the coins from greatest to least value: Quarter, Quarter, Dime, Penny, Penny, Penny.
- Next, count the quarters: 25 cents plus 25 cents is 50 cents.
- Then, add the dime: 50 cents plus 10 cents is 60 cents.
- Now, add the three pennies: 60 cents plus 3 cents is 63 cents.
- Write the final amount with a cent sign: 63¢.
- Write the final amount with a dollar sign and decimal point: $0.63.
