Imagine you are hosting a mini-party and have 3 plates. If you place 2 delicious cookies on each plate, how many cookies do you have in total? You could count them one by one, or add them up: 2 + 2 + 2 = 6.
Instead of adding the same number over and over, we can use multiplication! We write this as 3 groups of 2, or 3 times 2 (3 × 2 = 6). It's a much faster way to find the total!
We can also organize our groups into neat rows and columns. This grid is called an 'array'. An array with 2 rows and 4 columns shows us that 2 groups of 4 make 8!
So, whenever you see equal-sized groups, you can multiply them! It is just a faster way of doing repeated addition. You're already getting the hang of it!
Find the total number of apples if you have 4 baskets, and each basket has 3 apples inside.
- Identify the number of groups: We have 4 baskets, which means we have 4 groups.
- Identify how many are in each group: Each basket has 3 apples.
- Write it out as addition: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.
- Write it as a multiplication sentence: 4 groups of 3 is written as 4 × 3.
- Calculate the total: 3 plus 3 is 6, plus 3 is 9, plus 3 is 12.
- State the final answer: 4 × 3 = 12 apples!
