Hi there! I'm Studyfin, and today we are going to explore how money works. It is super exciting to learn how we earn money and how we can save it for cool things!

Have you ever wondered where money comes from? People earn money, called income, by doing jobs. This can be by teaching, building houses, or even walking dogs!

back to school

Once we earn an income, we can do two main things with our money: spend it on things we need right now, or save it for the future. Saving means putting money away in a safe place like a piggy bank or a bank account.

Saving Money Grows Your Future!

When we save, our money adds up over time. If you save $2 every single week, your total savings will grow bigger and bigger. This is simple addition!

2 Week 1 4 Week 2 6 Week 3
✏️ Worked example

Leo earns $5 each week for doing his chores. He wants to buy a toy spaceship that costs $15. How many weeks does Leo need to save all of his income to buy the toy?

  1. Identify the goal: Leo needs to save a total of $15.
  2. Identify the weekly savings: Leo saves $5 every week.
  3. Count by 5s until you reach 15: Week 1 is $5, Week 2 is $5 + $5 = $10, and Week 3 is $10 + $5 = $15.
  4. Alternatively, use division: $15 divided by $5 equals 3.
  5. Leo needs to save his money for 3 weeks to buy the toy spaceship!
