Hello there! I'm Studyfin, and today we are going to explore how we measure time and count money. These are super useful skills you will use every single day!
Have you ever wondered how we keep track of our day? We use clocks to tell time! Clocks have numbers from 1 to 12, and they help us know when it is time for school, lunch, or play.
A clock has two main hands. The short hand points to the hour, and the long hand points to the minutes. As the minutes tick by, the long hand spins all the way around!
Just like we count minutes, we also count coins to buy things! We use skip counting by 5s and 10s to count coins like nickels (5¢) and dimes (10¢) quickly.
Mia has 3 dimes and 1 nickel in her pocket. She wants to buy a cool sticker that costs 35¢. Does she have enough money to buy it?
- Identify the value of each coin: a dime is worth 10¢ and a nickel is worth 5¢.
- Count the dimes first by skip counting by 10s: 10¢, 20¢, 30¢.
- Next, add the nickel by counting up by 5: 30¢ + 5¢ = 35¢.
- Compare Mia's total money (35¢) to the price of the sticker (35¢).
- Since 35¢ is exactly equal to 35¢, Mia has just enough money to buy the sticker!
