Hi there! I am Studyfin, your math buddy. Today we will learn how to solve fun story problems using math!

Word problems are like short stories with a math puzzle. We can use addition and subtraction to solve them. First, we find the numbers in the story. Then, we choose the best math tool to help us.

student

Let us look at a subtraction story. If you have 8 apples and give some away, you subtract. We can show this with a math picture to see what is left.

8 Apples - 3 Given Away = 5 Left

We can also use multiplication for equal groups. If you have 3 bags with 4 toys in each, you can multiply. 3 times 4 makes 12. This is much faster than adding!

3 Groups of 4 = 12
✏️ Worked example

Leo has 15 toy cars. He puts them into 3 equal boxes. How many toy cars are in each box?

  1. Find the total number of toy cars. Leo has 15 cars.
  2. Find the number of boxes. He has 3 boxes.
  3. Think about the math action. We are sharing 15 cars into 3 equal groups. Sharing equally means we divide.
  4. Write the math sentence: 15 divided by 3.
  5. Solve the division: 15 / 3 = 5. There are 5 toy cars in each box.
