Have you ever wondered how much wrapping paper you need for a gift, or how much fence is needed to go around a yard? Shapes have two different kinds of measurements: the inside space and the outside edge!
Perimeter is the total distance all the way around the outside of a shape. Think of it like a fence around a backyard! To find it, you simply add the lengths of all the sides together.
Area is the amount of flat space inside a shape. Think of it like the grass carpet filling up the backyard! We measure area in square units, like counting up tiles on a floor.
Find the perimeter and area of a sticky note that is 4 inches wide and 4 inches tall.
- 1. Identify the shape: Since all four sides are equal (4 inches), this sticky note is a square!
- 2. Find the Perimeter: Add all 4 outer sides together. 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16 inches.
- 3. Find the Area: Multiply the side length by itself to see how many square units fit inside. 4 times 4 = 16 square inches.
- 4. Celebrate: The perimeter is 16 inches, and the area is 16 square inches!
