Fractions tell us about parts of a whole. When we compare them, we look to see which fraction is larger or smaller. Sometimes, words can sound the same but mean different things. In reading, we call these homophones, like 'reign' and 'rain'. In math, different numbers can also describe the same size!
Let us explain this using a concrete example. Imagine two fraction bars of the exact same size. One bar is cut into four parts, and we shade two parts. The other bar is cut into two parts, and we shade one part. Both shaded areas cover the exact same space!
Now, let us analyze what happens when we compare fractions with different bottom numbers. When the bottom numbers are different, we can find a common ground. We change them so they share the same bottom number. This lets us easily see which one is bigger!
Compare the fractions 1/2 and 2/3. Explain which fraction is larger by finding a common bottom number.
- First, look at the bottom numbers, which are 2 and 3.
- Next, find a number that both 2 and 3 can multiply into. The number 6 works perfectly!
- Multiply the top and bottom of 1/2 by 3 to get 3/6.
- Multiply the top and bottom of 2/3 by 2 to get 4/6.
- Compare the new fractions: 3/6 is smaller than 4/6.
- Explain the final answer: Since 3/6 is less than 4/6, we know that 1/2 is less than 2/3!
