We use different tools to measure things. In the United States, we use customary units like inches and pounds. Most other countries use metric units like centimeters and grams.
Let us look at length. An inch is about the size of a paperclip. A centimeter is much smaller, like the width of a small fingernail.
Now let us look at weight. We use ounces for light things like a slice of bread. We use grams to measure tiny things like a single paperclip.
✏️ Worked example
Sam wants to measure the length of a pencil. Should Sam use inches or miles? Explain why.
Think about the size of a pencil. A pencil is small and fits in your hand.
Look at the choices. Inches are small units. Miles are very long units used for roads.
Compare the pencil to the units. A pencil is about seven inches long.
A pencil is much too small to be measured in miles.
So, Sam should use inches to measure the pencil.
