Data is just a fancy word for information! When we collect information—like asking our friends what their favorite fruit is—we can use a bar graph to make it easy to read.
A bar graph uses colorful bars to show amounts. The taller or longer the bar is, the bigger the number it represents!
Every bar graph has labels on the bottom and numbers on the side. This helps us count and compare the bars instantly without having to recount the items one by one!
Sally asked her classmates to name their favorite pets. She found that 4 kids chose Cats, 8 kids chose Dogs, and 2 kids chose Fish. How can we write down the steps to build a bar graph for this data?
- Write down the category names (Cat, Dog, Fish) along the bottom axis of the graph.
- Create a number scale on the left axis, counting up by 2s (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10).
- Draw a bar above 'Cat' that goes straight up to the line for the number 4.
- Draw a bar above 'Dog' that goes straight up to the line for the number 8.
- Draw a bar above 'Fish' that goes straight up to the line for the number 2.
- Give the graph a fun title, like 'Our Favorite Pets'!
