Hey there! Today we are going to explore the wonderful world of decimals. Decimals are just a super cool way to show numbers that are smaller than one whole!
Imagine you have a delicious, whole chocolate bar. If you cut it into 10 equal pieces, each piece is called one-tenth. In math, we write this as 0.1!
The secret key to decimals is the decimal point. It sits quietly to the right of the ones place, acting like a bridge between whole numbers and tiny parts!
If we divide that same chocolate bar into 100 tiny crumbs, each crumb is one-hundredth, written as 0.01. It takes one hundred of these crumbs to make one whole bar!
✏️ Worked example
Let's write 'four tenths' and 'seven hundredths' as decimals!
- Think about 'four tenths' first. Tenths are the very first spot to the right of the decimal point.
- Put a 4 in that tenths spot: 0.4.
- Now think about 'seven hundredths'. Hundredths are the second spot to the right of the decimal point.
- Since there are no tenths mentioned, we put a 0 in the tenths spot as a placeholder.
- Put the 7 in the hundredths spot to get: 0.07!
