Division

Grade 4 · Math · Free lesson

Hey there, math explorer! Today we are going to learn how division is all about sharing things fairly with your friends.

Division means splitting a large group of items into smaller, equal groups. It is the opposite of multiplication!

Imagine you have 6 delicious cookies and you want to share them equally between 2 plates. Let's watch how they land one by one so each plate gets the exact same amount!

Plate 1 (3 cookies)Plate 2 (3 cookies)

When we write this as a math sentence, we say: 6 divided by 2 equals 3. We use the special division symbol (÷) to show this action!

62=3Divided By!
✏️ Worked example

Share 8 bright balloons equally among 4 excited children. How many balloons does each child get?

  1. Start with the total number of balloons: 8.
  2. Count the number of groups you need to make: 4 (one group for each child).
  3. Give one balloon to each child, then another, until all 8 are gone.
  4. Count how many balloons each child has now. Each child has exactly 2 balloons!
  5. Write your division sentence: 8 ÷ 4 = 2.
