Every number has secret partners called factors. Factors are smaller numbers that multiply together perfectly to make a bigger number, like puzzle pieces fitting together.
Let's find the factors of 6. We can arrange 6 blocks into equal rows. We can make 1 row of 6, or 2 rows of 3! This means 1, 2, 3, and 6 are all factors of 6.
Now, let's look at multiples! Multiples are what you get when you multiply a number by 1, 2, 3, and so on. It is just like skip-counting or climbing a ladder of numbers!
✏️ Worked example
Find the factors of 8.
Start with the number 1. Since 1 x 8 = 8, both 1 and 8 are factors!
Try the number 2. Since 8 is even, 2 x 4 = 8. So, 2 and 4 are factors!
Try the number 3. If we skip-count by 3 (3, 6, 9), we miss 8. So 3 is not a factor.
Since 4 is already on our list, we have found them all!
The factors of 8 are: 1, 2, 4, and 8.
