Hello! I'm Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today, we are going to explore fractions, which are just friendly ways to show parts of a whole!
Imagine you have a delicious, fresh pizza to share with your best friend. If you cut it right down the middle, you get two equal pieces.
Each piece is called one-half. We write this as 1/2, where the bottom number shows how many total equal pieces we made.
The top number is the numerator, which counts the parts we have. The bottom number is the denominator, which tells us the total number of parts.
✏️ Worked example
Sally cut a giant chocolate bar into 4 equal pieces. She ate 1 piece. What fraction of the chocolate bar did Sally eat?
- Count the total number of equal pieces. There are 4 pieces in total, so our denominator (bottom number) is 4.
- Count how many pieces Sally ate. She ate 1 piece, so our numerator (top number) is 1.
- Put the numerator over the denominator to write the fraction: 1/4.
- We read this fraction as 'one-fourth'!
