Hi there! Today we will learn how to share big numbers into equal groups.
Division means sharing things fairly. When we divide a big number, we can break it into smaller parts like hundreds, tens, and ones.

We can represent division using a special house symbol. The big number goes inside the house, and the divisor stands outside.
To solve, we use a step-by-step method. First we divide, then we multiply, next we subtract, and finally we bring down the next digit.
✏️ Worked example
Divide 84 by 4 using the standard algorithm.
- Set up the problem with 84 inside the division house and 4 on the outside.
- Divide the tens column first. Ask: How many times does 4 go into 8? It goes in exactly 2 times.
- Write the 2 on top of the house, right above the 8.
- Multiply 2 by 4 to get 8. Write 8 below the 8 in the tens place, and subtract. 8 minus 8 is 0.
- Bring down the 4 from the ones place. Now we have 4.
- Divide 4 by 4. It goes in exactly 1 time. Write 1 on top. The final answer is 21!
