Every coin has its own look and value. We have the copper penny, the thick nickel, the small dime, and the large quarter.
We write coin values with a cent symbol, like 5¢ or 25¢. When we use dollar bills, we use a dollar sign and a decimal point, like $1.00.
To find the value of a group of coins, start with the coin that is worth the most. Skip-count up to get the total amount.
✏️ Worked example
Find the total value of 1 quarter, 1 dime, 2 nickels, and 3 pennies. Write the answer in two different ways.
- First, identify the value of each coin. A quarter is 25¢, a dime is 10¢, a nickel is 5¢, and a penny is 1¢.
- Next, order the coins from greatest value to least value: 25¢, 10¢, 5¢, 5¢, 1¢, 1¢, 1¢.
- Now, skip-count to find the total. Start at 25. Add 10 to get 35. Add 5 to get 40. Add 5 to get 45.
- Continue counting the pennies: 46, 47, 48. The total is 48 cents.
- Write this total using the cent symbol: 48¢.
- Write this total using the dollar sign and decimal point: $0.48.
