Multi-digit multiplication (area model & standard algorithm)

An area model breaks a big multiplication problem into smaller, easy parts. We split numbers by place value to find small products.

Let us break 12 into 10 plus 2. Next, break 13 into 10 plus 3. We multiply the parts in four small boxes.

After finding the four parts, add them together. 100 plus 30 plus 20 plus 6 equals 156 total.

The standard algorithm is another fast way to multiply. We multiply ones first, then tens, and add the partial answers.
