Welcome, math explorer! Today we are going to discover how multiplication is like a superpower that helps us add groups of numbers super fast.
Have you ever had to add the same number over and over again? Multiplication is just a shortcut for doing exactly that! It is called 'repeated addition.'
Imagine you have 3 friendly monsters, and each monster has 2 bright eyes. Instead of counting 2 + 2 + 2, we can say we have 3 groups of 2!
We write this in math using the multiplication sign 'x'. So, 3 groups of 2 becomes 3 x 2 = 6. The numbers we multiply are called 'factors', and the answer is called the 'product'.
✏️ Worked example
Find the total number of cupcakes if you have 4 boxes, and each box contains 3 delicious cupcakes.
- Identify the groups: We have 4 boxes (this is our first factor).
- Identify the amount in each group: Each box has 3 cupcakes (this is our second factor).
- Write it as repeated addition: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.
- Write it as multiplication: 4 groups of 3 is written as 4 x 3.
- Calculate the final product: 4 x 3 = 12 cupcakes!
