Hey there! I'm Studyfin, your math buddy. Today we are going to explore the difference between the space around a shape and the space inside it!
Imagine you are building a cozy backyard for a puppy. The fence you build around the edge is the perimeter, while the grass inside where the puppy plays is the area!
Perimeter is the total distance all the way around the outside of a shape. To find it, we simply add the lengths of all the outer sides together like a path.
Area is the amount of flat space inside a shape. We measure it in square units, like counting how many square tiles it takes to cover a floor.
✏️ Worked example
Find the perimeter and area of a rectangular garden that is 5 meters long and 3 meters wide.
Identify the side lengths: two sides are 5 meters, and two sides are 3 meters.
To find the perimeter, add all four sides together: 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 meters.
To find the area, multiply the length by the width: 5 x 3 = 15 square meters.
Remember your units! Perimeter is in meters, and Area is in square meters.
