Hey there! I'm Studyfin, and today we are going to explore the wonderful world of decimals. They are just like secret codes for parts of a whole!
Have you ever seen a price tag like $1.50 or measured something that was 4.5 centimeters long? Those little dots are called decimal points, and they help us show numbers that are between whole numbers.
Imagine a giant chocolate bar cut into 10 equal pieces. If you eat just one piece, you've eaten one-tenth of the bar! In decimal language, we write this as 0.1.
The decimal point is like a castle wall. To the left of the wall live the proud whole numbers (ones, tens, hundreds). To the right of the wall live the tiny fraction parts, starting with the tenths place!
Let's write 'three tenths' as a decimal number.
- Identify how many whole numbers we have. Since we only have 'three tenths' and no whole numbers, we write a 0 in the ones place.
- Put down our handy decimal point right next to the zero: '0.'
- Look at the first place to the right of the decimal point. This is the tenths place!
- Put the number 3 in that tenths place to get our final answer: 0.3.
